We’re Hiring: Senior Landscape Architect / Director level
Glenkemp is seeking a Senior Chartered Landscape Architect
to join the practice at Director level.
We are offering a rare opportunity for a suitable senior landscape professional to play a defining role in the leadership and future direction of a well established landscape architecture practice with a strong regional reputation and a diverse and stimulating workload.
Founded in 1982, Glenkemp is one of the North East’s longest-established landscape architectural practices. Since taking over the practice in 2014, Philip Barker has led the business as sole Director and is now seeking to expand the senior leadership team in response to an increasing workload.
The Practice
Glenkemp has built a reputation for thoughtful, context-led landscape design across a wide range of sectors, often within sensitive or regionally and nationally significant settings. By deliberately remaining a small and agile practice, we provide clients with a very personal service, yet deliver work of considerable breadth and scale.
Recent projects within the last 3 years include:
• Hospice and therapeutic landscapes
• Solar farm planning appeals
• Visitor facilities for a nationally significant heritage asset
• Landscape masterplanning for a National Park Authority
• An Historic Parkland Management Plan
• Major residential developments
• A boutique hotel within a nationally important heritage setting
• Regeneration of a Grade II listed and locally iconic residential estate
• A community garden for a charity supporting refugees and asylum seekers
• Extra-care and specialist housing
• A visitor centre within a World Heritage Site
• A Woodland Management Plan for an historic estate landscape
Our work is rooted in a deep understanding of place, heritage and landscape character, combined with a pragmatic approach to delivery. We value design quality, but equally the ability to navigate planning policy and budget parameters in order to assist clients achieve sustainable outcomes.
The Opportunity
This role offers genuine influence and visibility within the practice. As a Director, you will share a leading role in shaping projects, developing client relationships and influencing the strategic direction of the business.
You will have:
• Shared responsibility for leading and delivering a diverse portfolio of projects
• The autonomy to guide design direction and project decision-making
• A meaningful role in developing client relationships and future workstreams
• The opportunity to leave a clear professional legacy within the region
This is a position for someone who values independence, working within a supportive friendly team, professional trust and the ability to see their judgement and experience directly reflected in the work of the practice.
We are looking for a highly experienced Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute – someone who can operate comfortably at a senior leadership level and who brings a strong track record across multiple project types and scales, with particular strength in navigating complex planning and heritage scenarios.
You will be:
• Commercially astute with experience of fee management, resourcing and client liaison
• Confident in report writing, offering strategic landscape advice and design leadership
• Comfortable balancing creative ambition with pragmatic, deliverable and environmentally sustainable solutions
• Driven by an empathy and understanding of the processes by which individuals and communities engage with the environment
• Motivated by a role offering influence, responsibility and long-term involvement
Above all, this role will suit someone looking for a director-level position within a respected, design-led practice, where their experience will shape not only individual projects but the future direction of the business itself.
If this opportunity is of interest, contact Philip Barker for an informal, ‘in confidence’ chat.
